AI4LUNGS Joins Roundtable on Common Challenges in AI-Health EU/HaDEA funded Projects

On 10th of June, the AI4LUNGS team participated in the Roundtable Session on “Common Challenges of AI Strategies-Related EU/HaDEA Funded Projects”, organised by PREPARE Rehab. This hybrid event, held in collaboration with several EU-funded projects, was hosted by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and brought together experts from across Europe to discuss the challenges and innovations in developing AI-powered tools for healthcare.

AI4LUNGS was represented by the Project Coordinator Hélder P. Oliveira and Duarte Dias, who shared insights into the hurdles and breakthroughs in AI-health projects. Dissemination Leader Thanos Arvanitidis from Future Needs attended the event physically to network with other participants.

Hélder P. Oliveira address significant challenges faced by AI-health projects. Joined the panel discussing topics on

◾Data Interoperability and Common Data Models

◾Federated Learning Approaches

◾Explainable AI Tools

◾Medical Device Regulation (MDR) Certification Issues and Procedures

Exploring the Role of AI in Healthcare

The roundtable discussions emphasised the potential of AI to revolutionise healthcare by addressing critical issues such as:

The rising administrative burden on healthcare providers.

Processing and managing large volumes of patient data to improve predictions, evaluations, and health monitoring.

AI offers innovative solutions by efficiently analysing data at scale, enabling healthcare providers to focus more on patient care while improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment personalisation.

Understanding the important role AI holds in healthcare, the panel explored a range of technical and regulatory challenges faced by AI-health projects, including:

Data Interoperability and Common Data Models: Bridging gaps to ensure seamless data integration.

Federated Learning Approaches: Enabling AI systems to learn collaboratively without compromising data privacy.

Explainable AI Tools: Developing transparent systems that ensure trust and accountability.

Medical Device Regulation (MDR) Compliance: Navigating complex certification procedures for AI tools in healthcare.

The session also highlighted the importance of ethical AI frameworks and robust validation standards to ensure fair, unbiased, and patient-centered solutions. Which AI4LUNGS has a dedicated work package for.

AI4LUNGS is honoured to be part of the conversation alongside with several EU-funded projects, including Microb-AI-ome, SPIDeRR, STRATA-FIT, STRATIF-AI, TARGET, CoMPaSS-NMD, and COMFORT-EU. All these initiatives are focused on creating AI tools that classify patients based on their risk of disease or response to therapy, ultimately enhancing the quality of care. We believe that together, with like-minded peers, we will be able to make healthcare more and more advanced, efficient, and make a great impact on the sector!
