AI4LUNGS Presented during the 25th Anniversary of MIHMEP: Exploration of the Future of AI in Healthcare in University of Bocconi

In May 2024 the Master of International Healthcare Management, Economics, and Policy (MIHMEP) program at SDA Bocconi marked its 25th anniversary with a landmark two-day celebration, hosted by our project partner Viviana Mangiaterra from SDA Bocconi. This event brought together alumni, faculty, and thought leaders to reconnect and engage in meaningful discussions on the innovations and challenges defining the global healthcare landscape.

Our project coordinator, INESC TEC, was represented by researcher João Manuel Pedrosa. João presented the AI4LUNGS project, sharing insights on the transformative opportunities and potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

During his presentation, João discussed:

Data Quality and Compartmentalisation

Addressing the fragmented nature of healthcare data and its implications for AI.

Privacy and Data Protection

Navigating the balance between innovation and safeguarding patient rights.

Validation Standards

Ensuring AI tools meet stringent clinical requirements before deployment.

Transparency and Accountability

Highlighting the need to mitigate errors and enhance the interpretability of AI models.

Impact on Infrastructure and Workforce

Exploring the downstream effects on healthcare infrastructure and the implications for job roles and satisfaction.

AI4LUNGS- Bringing AI in Healthcare Into Reality

During the presentation, João showcased AI4LUNGS as a real-world example of tackling these challenges to create impactful AI-driven tools aimed at improving patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency. In a thought-provoking statement, João shared, “AI’s role in healthcare is fundamentally about augmenting human capabilities, not replacing them.”

He also emphasized the importance of embedding ethical principles into AI development, stating, “As we integrate AI into healthcare settings, we must ensure these systems are fair, unbiased, and respectful of patient rights.”

The Honour of Joining the Milestone Event for MIHMEP

This milestone celebration not only honored MIHMEP’s legacy but also provided a platform for forward-looking discussions on the intersection of healthcare, technology, and policy.

The AI4LUNGS project was proud to be represented at this event, contributing to the conversation on how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to tackle some of healthcare’s most complex challenges while upholding transparency, ethics, and patient-centric care.
