Greece is often imagined as a paradise… with sun-lit coastlines, rich traditions, warm hospitality, and unforgettable food. But like every country, it faces its share of hidden health challenges. One of the most pressing? Lung health — Greece’s longstanding relationship with smoking and its repercussions on lung health.
In this article, the Greek Ministry of Health, AI4LUNGS’ project partner, provided some insights on the common habits of Greece.
A Country That Smokes
Whether it is the morning coffee, a chat outside a café, or a late-night gathering, smoking often finds a place in Greek daily life. It’s been part of country’s culture for
decades. Unfortunately, more than a third of adults in Greece still smoke regularly,
placing the country among those with the highest smoking rates in Europe.
The impact of this is becoming evident in hospitals and clinics. Conditions like
asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other long-term
breathing problems are gaining prevalence. In fact, over 8% of the Greek population
lives with a chronic respiratory illness and there are probably many more cases
remaining undiagnosed.
It’s Not Just About Lungs — It’s About Shared Responsibility
Living with a respiratory condition affects far more than just breathing, it makes simple tasks more difficult: climbing stairs, catching a bus, or even a good night’s sleep can become daily challenges.
And it is not just personal. Families feel it, workplaces feel it, and the already overburdened healthcare system feels it too!
Then came COVID-19: a harsh reminder of how vulnerable we are when our
lungs are weak. It also reminded us of the importance of prevention and early actions.
Breathing Meets Technology: What AI4LUNGS Is Doing
Now, here’s where things get hopeful!
Across Europe, including Greece, new technologies are being developed to help people better understand and manage their lung health at an earlier stage. One of them is AI4LUNGS, a project that uses artificial intelligence to support doctors in diagnosing and monitoring complex lung conditions, including cancer and rare diseases.
The Bigger Picture: A Lifestyle Shift
Of course, technology alone isn’t enough. We need to talk openly about the habits that harm us such as smoking. Starting conversations, offering support and promoting cessation programs and ultimately helping people feel in control of their health, not being ashamed of it.
Improving lung health in Greece does not mean changing the Greek identity. It
means protecting what matters most: the wellbeing, the families and the future of
Greek citizens. By combining science, smart tools, and a shift in culture, we can start
to breathe easier all together.
