As time flies, AI4LUNGS celebrated its 3rd project meeting in Milan, Italy on 18-19 May. At this crucial phase of the project, where the technical partners are working on the collected data from the clinical partners, and the clinical partners doing data analysis, the meeting was a productive discussion between the clinical and technical partners, with ethical and legal specialists listening and giving inputs.

First Day- Technical Advancement of the AI4LUNGS Data and Platform

The first day focused on the technology of AI4LUNGS. Partners shared advancements in the development of the AI4LUNGS platform, including work on AI-powered analytics, natural language processing, semantic data processing, and personalised diagnosis and treatment models. Discussions also explored how trustworthy AI and large language models can support clinical decision-making while maintaining transparency and reliability.

The technical partners that are in charge of the AI4LUNGS platform development and also data transfer presented updates on key project components. The clinical partners presented the data analysis updates, these ranged from molecular profiling workflows and data correlation analysis to causal modelling, data integration methodologies, and system deployment strategies. Clinical data management and validation were also highlighted, alongside plans for future open datasets that will support research and exploitation activities beyond the project's lifetime.

Developing trustworthy AI for healthcare requires more than technological excellence, it depends on continuous collaboration between clinicians, researchers, technical experts, and legal specialists.

The meeting ended with an interactive workshop, examining real-world scenarios related to bias in healthcare data, explainability of AI systems, ambiguity in clinical decision support, and the challenges of ensuring robust AI performance in real-world settings hosted by Deloitte.

Second Day, Legal Requirements and the Exploitation of the AI4LUNGS Results

On the second day, a workshop led by Timelex explored the implications of the European Health Data Space and reinforced the importance of addressing regulatory requirements from the earliest stages of development. These discussions highlighted the importance of balancing technological innovation with legal protection and moderation and patient trust.

The meeting concluded with discussions on exploitation and sustainability strategies, led by Future Needs, focusing on how AI4LUNGS results can create long-term impact and support future healthcare innovation.

The two-day event demonstrated the strength of the AI4LUNGS consortium and the value of bringing together expertise from across disciplines. As the project continues to advance, partners remain committed to developing trustworthy, ethical, and impactful AI solutions that support better outcomes for patients and healthcare professionals alike.

A special thank you goes to the team at SDA Bocconi for hosting and organising a successful and productive meeting.
