AI4LUNGS Awareness Workshop Germany: Gathering 44 Clinical and Technical Experts!

The AI4LUNGS Awareness Workshop Germany successfully concluded on 16 September, bringing together 44 clinical and technical experts for a discussion around the landscape of AI in healthcare.


Hosted by our legal and ethical partners Deloitte and Timelex, together with technical partners RPTU and Fraunhofer, the workshop provided an opportunity to explore the AI4LUNGS project from different perspectives: AI4LUNGS’ responsible and trustworthy AI to user-centred design, clinical decision support system, machine learning, and medical imaging from RACOON.



Let’s look at some of the highlights from the day!


Introducing AI4LUNGS and its commitment to responsible AI

The event opened with an introduction to AI4LUNGS by Isabel Schlegel and Marta Wilińska, who presented the project and our focus on developing AI technologies in line with ethical principles and European regulatory requirements.


We design the AI4LUNGS interface with clinicians in mind, ensuring that it is actually effective and practical for them. Michael Faber from Reichman University presented the AI4LUNGS UX/UI interface, offering insights into the thinking and research behind its design.


The interface has been shaped through engagement with clinicians and interviews aimed at understanding the needs of potential users. This user-centred approach is essential for developing technology that can fit into real clinical environments and provide information in a practical and accessible way.


Exploring the AI4LUNGS Technology- How does it work?

Our technical partners Jonas Flechsig and Davide Bassetti then showed us the technology used in AI4LUNGS.


Jonas showed us how the AI4LUNGS Clinical Decision Support System is being developed to support healthcare professionals. The system brings together relevant information and AI-generated insights, which the aim is to help clinicians navigate complex information while keeping the healthcare professional at the centre of the decision-making process.


Davide presented the machine learning approaches and AI components being explored within the AI4LUNGS project. AI4LUNGS is using appropriate ML and AI methods to extract meaningful information from multimodal data and develop models capable of generating useful and efficient insights. But when there is not enough data, how can we work with that?


A key aspect of this work is interpretability. The project is exploring ways to make the model's decision-making processes more understandable and to provide clear visual feedback through the user interface.


This connection between advanced AI methods and understandable outputs is particularly important in clinical settings, where healthcare professionals need to be able to critically assess AI-supported information.


RACOON: enabling collaborative medical imaging research in Germany

Another important part of the workshop was the presentation of RACOON (Radiology Cooperative Network), a nationwide infrastructure project within the Netzwerk Universitätsmedizin (NUM) focused on collaborative, AI-enabled medical imaging research.

The initiative aims to make medical imaging research more collaborative, secure, and scalable. By enabling researchers to work with high-quality imaging data across multiple sites, standardise research workflows, and develop and apply AI methods, RACOON supports multicentric research while addressing strict data protection and regulatory requirements.

The session featured Prof. Dr. med. Tobias Penzkofer from Klinikum Neumarkt Klinik für Radiologie and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, together with Julia van Holt from Firemetrics. Their presentation explored the role of RACOON in enabling multicentric studies and supporting AI-powered imaging analysis.

Bringing different perspectives together

Bringing together clinicians, technical experts, researchers, and specialists in legal and ethical aspects created space for meaningful discussions about both the opportunities and the practical challenges of applying AI in healthcare.
