On 14 November, Advancing Healthcare with AI Workshop hosted by dAIbetes brought together a small but highly engaged group of researchers and practitioners to explore how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of healthcare, with a special focus on diabetes and lung health.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the panel “AI4LUNGS – Creating a digital-twin focused on lung pathologies: Challenges and achievements,” hosted by Hélder Oliveira, coordinator of the AI4LUNGS project. Starting at 15:30, the session opened the floor to discussions around the opportunities and complexities of bringing AI-driven innovation into clinical environments.
During the workshop, together with the panelists Mahdis Habibpour from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Hélder Oliveira from INESC TEC, Jan Baumbach from University of Hamburg, Marianna Maranghi from Sapienza University of Rome, Sanjeev Mehta from Joslin Diabetes Center, the participants discussed:
🧬 Defining Virtual Twins in Healthcare: Participants examined what a “virtual twin” truly means in the context of ongoing research projects.
📊 Data Collection and Its Hurdles: Gathering high-quality, diverse, and interoperable data in different clinical protocols, the need for standardised approaches were recurring points of reflection.
🔐 Data Security as a Priority: As expected, data privacy and security were core of the conversation. Experts discussed how safeguarding sensitive health information remains essential for trust, compliance, and long-term adoption of AI-enhanced healthcare systems.
