Spotlight on AI4LUNGS’ Technical Partner: Fraunhofer ITWM!

Who is Fraunhofer ITWM? What are their roles in AI4LUNGS?

In this interview, we’re spotlighting one of our technical partners: Fraunhofer ITWM, represented by Alexander Scherre. Fraunhofer ITWM plays a crucial role in designing and developing the clinical decision support system (cDSS) that will help doctors plan more precise, tailored treatments for lung conditions.

Their work includes:

  • Designing the method and software structure of the cDSS

  • Integrating real-world medical content and expert knowledge

  • Developing and connecting the system to other AI modules within the AI4LUNGS platform

  • Preparing the system for real-world clinical testing

This decision support system will eventually become a key component of the AI4LUNGS digital platform, helping clinicians make decisions.

The Fraunhofer ITWM is one of Europe’s largest research centers focused on applied mathematics. Their mission? To bridge the gap between complex mathematical research and real-world applications, from healthcare to finance to engineering.

In this video interview, Alexander shares his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of building AI-driven healthcare tools in such a diverse and collaborative environment.

"Success begins when experts from different fields learn to understand each other’s language." Alexander Scherrer, Deputy Head of Department "Optimization in Life Sciences" at Fraunhofer ITWM

AI4LUNGS interviews are a miniseries where every month, the communication and dissemination manager Future Needs will produce a video introducing the project partners, showcasing the experts behind the scenes of AI4LUNGS.
