AI4LUNGS Awareness Workshop series kicked off in February 2026!
Developing trustworthy AI for healthcare is not just about building the technology itself, but also about ensuring that the technology meets the real needs of the people who will use it. The Awareness Workshop series brings together healthcare professionals, patients, researchers, policymakers, legal experts, and technology developers to co-design AI solutions that are practical, ethical, and fit for clinical practice.
The first two workshops, held in Norway and Israel, successfully collected feedback from patients, healthcare professionals, and technical experts. The workshops explored how AI can support lung disease diagnosis and treatment while addressing key topics such as trust, transparency, data quality, privacy, and patient involvement.

Call for papers! Join us in IEEE BIBM in Dallas Texas 1-4th December 2026
Join us at the AI4LUNGS Workshop at IEEE BIBM 2026 in Dallas, Texas, USA, and contribute to the future of AI-driven personalised care for respiratory diseases. We invite researchers working in medical imaging, biomedical signals, multimodal AI, clinical data, machine learning, and related fields to submit their latest work. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Computer Society Conference Proceedings. Paper submission deadline: September 27, 2026. Submit now!

Calling for Physicians!
We are inviting physicians in the field of respiratory diseases to take our survey and help us understand their perceptions and attitudes towards AI in healthcare settings. Your feedback will help AI4LUNGS design and implement AI that meets the needs of healthcare professionals, and will inform the development and evaluation of AI4LUNGS technologies, as well as the future integration of AI within respiratory healthcare. Open Workshop and the Two-Day-Meeting in Milan!​
Every year, the 18 AI4LUNGS partners gather and discuss the progress of the project and to align future activities. This year, we were delighted to meet in the beautiful and green Milan, hosted by SDA Bocconi on their campus.
The technical and clinical partners updated the group on progress with platform development and data analysis, while the legal and ethical experts ensured that every step taken abides by current and upcoming law.

Following the two-day meeting, the AI4LUNGS partners continued into a third day with the AI4LUNGS Open Workshop, inviting prestigious speakers Giulia Maria Stella from Università degli Studi di Pavia, Francesco Migliavacca from the Polytechnic of Milan, and Luca Bertolaccini from IEO to join the conversation.

Project Updates
The clinical partners are progressing with validation, pilot preparation, and clinical assessment of AI4LUNGS' AI solutions. Current work includes developing a validation framework and key performance indicators, preparing pilot studies in participating medical centres, and assessing usability, clinician trust, and integration into routine clinical practice.
In parallel, Health Technology Assessment activities are evaluating the potential impact of AI4LUNGS on clinical workflows, resource use, and healthcare costs. These efforts will support the deployment of trustworthy, effective, and sustainable AI tools for respiratory healthcare.
New Regulations in Medical Technology Alert!
AI4LUNGS’ legal partner Timelex has recently published two insightful articles on key regulatory developments affecting AI-powered medical technologies. The articles provide valuable guidance for healthcare organisations, software developers, and innovators seeking to navigate the legal framework for trustworthy AI in healthcare.
