Kicking Off the AI4LUNGS Platform: Smarter Tools for Better Care

The development of the AI4LUNGS digital platform is officially underway! Led by KPMG Israel and supported by technical and clinical partners, this work package is building a powerful and practical tool with the goal to help healthcare professionals make faster, more accurate decisions when treating patients with complex lung conditions.

To do this, AI4LUNGS is collecting more than 2500 real-world patient records from our clinical partners (safely and following the privacy regulations) and turning them into smart insights. The platform will feature a user-friendly dashboard designed with doctors in mind and include an AI-powered “digital twin” system that can simulate different patient scenarios, offering tailored treatment suggestions based on real data.

Behind the scenes, our partners have carefully planned each step and addressed potential risks to keep everything on track.

Updates on the Stakeholder Forum

The AI4LUNGS Stakeholders Forum brings together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, hospital administrators, and IT specialists who share a common goal: transforming respiratory healthcare through the power of AI. In the past months, 2 Stakeholder Forum Sessions were held on the 7th of February and the 20th of May.

The 2nd Stakeholders’ Forum Clinical Validation Workshop focused on validating and refining the end-user requirements of the project platform through structured feedback from the members of the Forum. Read more about the workshop here.

The 3rd Online Stakeholder Forum Session was led by Reichman University. The participants explored the psychology behind successful physician & AI collaboration. The session focused on designing intuitive, human-centered interfaces that support trust, engagement, and usability for clinicians interacting with AI tools. Read more about the workshop here.

What is the EU AI Act? Training with the Partners

image.png

As AI4LUNGS advances towards deploying clinically supportive AI tools, understanding the legal landscape becomes essential. Magdalena Kogut - Czarkowska and Marta WiliÅ„ska from Timelex, AI4LUNGS’ legal partner, break down the implications of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) during an online training with the partners. They explained:

  • How the Act applies to research projects like AI4LUNGS

  • What will change once AI tools are brought to market, and why early compliance is key to developing responsible and legally sound AI in healthcare.

It is important for the project to consider compliance with the EU AI Act early on, to avoid future compliance burdens.
